The early man from Krapina was discovered back in 1899. Excavations lasted for six years (1899-1905) under the supervision of Dragutin Gorjanović-Kramberger, a well-known Croatian geologist, paleontologist and paleoanthropologist. There are numerous fossil remains of cave bear, gray wolf, moose, huge deer, warm-blood rhinoceros, trachea and many other animals and about 900 human fossil bones. The age of this paleontological site corresponds to 125,000 years ago. It is protected as the first paleontological monument of the Republic of Croatia and included in one of the richest paleontological habitats of the Neanderthal man in Croatia and Europe. The museum was officially opened on February 27, 2010.
