He was a Croatian politician, linguist, ideologist, reporter and writer. He had an important role in The Croatian national revival. The house of Ljudevit Gaj is in the town centre. During his childhood they spoke German and later Croatian. The museum of Ljudevit Gaj was opened in 1966 in his birth house. He brought Croatia to its feet, woke up the almost dead national question and carried the Croatian language to every corner of his homeland.
